Riddle Contest
Posted by Anthony E. Zuiker on Aug 2, 2010

While all of you are eagerly anticipating the release of Dark Prophecy this October, we here at Dare to Pass have already begun thinking of the third book in the series. That’s right, we’re thinking that far ahead.

We’re locking picture on the Dark Prophecy cyber-bridges this week, we’ve started working with our composer for the music, sound designer and color correctionist. And soon, we’re going to start ramping up our campaign for the Dark Prophecy release. You’ll see the brand new website we’ve created, the trailer for the cyber-bridges, photos, behind-the-scenes and all that good stuff.

We’re so excited to bring this stuff to you guys, it looks amazing and I can’t wait to hear your response.

That said, we haven’t had a contest in a while and as we begin development on Book 3, I wanted to get you, the community, involved again.

So here it is, the contest for the week:

We’re looking for riddles. Lots of them. And would love to hear what you guys have. We’re looking for the most puzzling, the most mind-bending riddles out there and you can submit as many as you want.

We’re not asking you to come up with your own. You can pull them from other sources, just be sure to credit where they’re from in your post. However, if you happen to have original riddles, we’d ask that you read the following disclaimer before you submit them:

Be advised that any content, feedback, comments, ideas, suggestions and/or materials (collectively, the “Materials”) posted or uploaded by you to this website shall be done so without the reservation of any rights or further control over the Materials or the Materials’ use by you and you specifically authorize this website and its owners, affiliates, licensees and assigns to use such Materials in whole or in part, throughout the universe, in perpetuity in any and all media now known or hereafter devised, free and clear of any and all claims for royalties, residuals, or other compensation.  By posting and/or uploading any such Materials, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to the foregoing. Please see the Terms of Use for further details.

Use the forum for this thread for your submissions. Once the contest period is over, we’ll post the collection and have the community vote on who submitted the best riddle.

The deadline for this contest is Friday, August 6, 2010 at 11:59 PM EST.

Winners will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Sqweegel awards.

Looking forward to hearing what you guys have for us.

Sqweegel the Thrill of Silence.

Congratulations to Matt Blackerwolf for winning the Tarot Card Designer contest. I thought all of the submissions were really fantastic but the community of Level 26 has spoken.

Per Matt’s prize, he will be given the chance to pitch me his take on the Tarot card designs for Dark Prophecy and the cyber-bridges.

Thanks to all who submitted. We’ll have many more opportunities such as this in the future.

Level 26ers,

UPDATE: Today is your last chance to vote for your favorite designer submission. Remember, you're not voting for the piece of art, you're voting for the artist. So be sure to spread the word, let everyone know that they have until tonight to submit their vote, and be a part of the process.

Submit your vote in the FORUM.

Thanks to all of you who submitted for our Tarot Card Designer Challenge. As mentioned, since Dark Prophecy is Tarot card centric, we’ll be featuring the card illustrations heavily in the book and we’re looking for a fantastic graphic artist to redesign the cards for the book and the cyber-bridges. The winner will be given the opportunity to pitch me their take on the Tarot card redesign.

We’ve received so many great submissions that we have decided to choose the Top 4, rather than limiting ourselves to three.

Now it’s up to you guys to choose a winner. Voting will go from the moment this post goes to live, to Monday, April 12 at 11:59 PM EST. Only one vote per user. Please submit your vote by posting the number of your choice to the FORUM.

For example, if you like #1, simply post #1 in the thread. Though some of you may know who submitted the designs, we’ve tried to keep them anonymous so you’re voting on the artwork only.

So, here are the Top 4 submissions. If you don’t see yours here, we had a lot of great submissions and could only choose three. Get voting.

Tarot Card Designer Challenge
Posted by Anthony E. Zuiker on Mar 25, 2010

Level 26ers,

We have a new community challenge for you. As you know, we have begun work on Dark Prophecy, book two in the Level 26 series. Not only are we currently working on the novel but the cyber-bridges as well. Since Dark Prophecy is Tarot card centric, we’ll be featuring the card illustrations heavily in the book and we’re looking for a fantastic graphic artist to redesign the cards for the book and the cyber-bridges.

It’s really important to me that you, the community, feel like a part of this process, that you have a say in the book, so I’m putting my search for an illustrator or graphic artist out to you guys. Do you know someone talented who’s looking for an opportunity? Tell them to submit for the opportunity to design the ten Tarot cards that will be featured in the book.

Here’s the contest: The graphic artist should submit a sample piece of artwork to the site by uploading it to their profile and flagging it as cool. I will choose the top three finalists. We will then post them to the site and you, the community, will vote for your favorite.

The winner will be given the opportunity pitch me their take on the Tarot card designs for the book.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 2 at 11:59 PM.

A great example of the type of work we're looking for can be found above. This was done by our very own Matt Blackerwolf.

So get out there, encourage your friends to submit, and continue to be a part of this process.

Deputy 26: Final Contest
Posted by Anthony E. Zuiker on Feb 19, 2010

Deputy 26ers,

Well, here we are, three months later, looking at our final Deputy 26 contest. We’ve had nine great contests so far with all of you doing a great job. We’ve had our ups and downs but those that have stayed on and continued submitting have helped build our community from 35 at Comic-Con last July to almost 55,000 today.

The Deputy 26 challenge was always designed to be a fun, engaging, interesting challenge that would help get the word out about this book that you all love so much. We wanted you guys to create teams that had their own identity, their own members, and then throw contests at you, all in good fun.

As a reminder, the winner and a +1 of their choosing will be flown out to Los Angeles during the shooting of the cyber-bridges for Book 2. We will provide coach flights from one airport (thus, if your plus one is flying from another place, they’ll have to pay the difference), a hotel room and make every effort to visually put you in the cyber-bridges.*

Now, the final Deputy 26 challenge:

We’ve provided you guys with 13 Tarot cards in our Final Deputy Challenge Album. Click the link to view and download the images. These cards will be heavily featured in the narrative for Book 2.

I want you guys to take five cards of your choosing and turn them into a storyline with Steve Dark chasing a killer with a proficiency in Tarot. The Tarot cards can factor into the story any way you choose. This story line does NOT have to be Black Sqweegel centric.

You must tell this story by providing the card and writing a paragraph (no more than 5-7 sentences) for each card.

I will personally read all the submissions. Whoever creates the best, most engaging storyline in my opinion will determine the Top 7 winners.

Since this is our last contest, I would encourage ALL of the Deputies to participate. Any negativity or bashing of the winners will result in immediate termination from the site. This is it, guys. Let’s end this competition with everyone having a really positive experience.

When you've completed your story, post the cards and paragraph in a blog on your profile and flag it as "cool".  We want to make sure that everyone's submission is counted, so if you're having trouble posting, please let Site Admin Jason know.

The deadline for this contest is Friday, March 5, 2010 at 11:59 PM EST.

Now, I’ve always encouraged, without hesitation, members of the site to submit their own ideas for the book series and said that I would take those into consideration. There is a possibility that what you guys submit could resemble what we’re working on for Book 2. As such, I’m required to include the following disclaimer:

Once the final winners are determined we’ll dissolve the Deputy 26 teams and go back to being a place where individuals can discuss Level 26. However, we’ll keep all of your submissions up for the time being.

I want to thank everyone who participated from week to week. I really believe you’ve helped this site grow beyond my expectations and it’s been a lot of fun coming up with challenges for you from week to week.

Zuiker

* A walk-on roll is typically a NON-SPEAKING part, usually in the capacity as an extra. We cannot guarantee that a walk-on will appear in the final version of the cyber-bridges.
